Solar Panel Cleaning in the Monsoon: Does Rain Really Clean Your Panels?

Many solar owners in India assume the monsoon will do their cleaning for them. Sometimes it does. But the monsoon also brings sticky dust, humidity, storms and long cloudy spells that can hide performance problems. Here is what changes for your panels during the rainy season and how to keep output on track.

Does rain clean solar panels?

Heavy, sustained rain does wash off a lot of loose dust, especially on steeply tilted panels. But light rain, drizzle and high humidity can make soiling worse. A field study by Duke University and IIT Gandhinagar on a Gujarat rooftop, reported by pv magazine, found that light rain and high humidity can actually double the soiling rate, because moisture makes fine dust stick to the glass. That is why panels often look streaky and dull after a light shower.

What changes in the monsoon

  • Stickier dust: dust turns into a film or mud streaks along the lower edge of the panel where water collects.
  • Bird activity and debris: leaves and droppings stick more easily to wet glass.
  • Lower irradiance: cloud cover reduces generation anyway, which can hide a real fault such as a tripped string.
  • Storms and wind: stress on mounting structures and loose cables.
  • Water ingress and earthing: damp junction boxes and corroded earthing are more likely.

Monsoon cleaning tips

  • Clean after light rain, not just before it. A quick dry brush once panels have dried removes the streaks that drizzle leaves behind.
  • Do not rely on rain alone. Keep an eye on generation on sunny breaks between showers.
  • Avoid cleaning during storms or when lightning is possible.
  • Pay attention to the bottom edge of each module, where muddy water dries into a line that shades the lowest row of cells.
  • Keep robots running. Waterless robots such as Solar Glide are waterproof and dustproof (BASIC, PRO and PRO MAX are IP-65 rated), so scheduled cleaning can continue through the season and catch the post-drizzle film.

Monsoon maintenance checklist

  • Before the monsoon: tighten structure bolts, check cable ties and conduit, inspect roof waterproofing around mounting points.
  • Check that drainage paths on the roof are clear so water does not pool around inverters or cables.
  • Inspect junction boxes and cable glands for water ingress.
  • Test earthing and lightning protection.
  • After big storms: walk the site and look for shifted panels, broken glass or loose cables.

Reading your generation data in the rainy season

Because cloudy days produce less, compare like with like: look at the best sunny day in each week. If that number keeps falling, the cause is probably soiling or a fault, not the weather.

After the monsoon

The end of the monsoon is usually followed by harvest dust and, in north India, stubble smoke. Plan to increase cleaning frequency as the rains stop.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop cleaning during the monsoon?

No. Reduce it if heavy rain is doing the job, but keep cleaning after light showers and during dry spells.

Is it safe to clean panels in the rain?

Avoid cleaning in storms or lightning, and do not work on wet rooftops without proper fall protection.
