India’s rooftop-solar leader has a dust problem
Gujarat has more rooftop solar than any other state: about 7,400 MW from more than 13 lakh systems by May 2026, and first place nationally under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Its total solar capacity passed 33 GW in June 2026.
Gujarat also has more than 200 GIDC industrial estates, whose sheds are among the largest roofs in the state. And for eight months a year, almost no rain falls on them: the monsoon runs from June to September, and the plains stay dry the rest of the time.
A rooftop study by IIT Gandhinagar found panels in Gujarat lost about 0.37% of their output every day they were not cleaned: around 8% in three weeks and 11% in a month. Only heavy rain cleaned them naturally.
